CA Senator Gets DUI After Leaving Gay Bar, Cops Say

(CN) - California state Sen. Roy Ashburn was arrested early Wednesday morning on charges of drunken driving after leaving a gay nightclub in Sacramento. The Bakersfield lawmaker has voted against every gay-rights measure since his election in 2002, including expanding anti-discrimination laws and recognizing out-of-state gay marriages.

According to reports, Ashburn was traveling with an unidentified male passenger who was not arrested. Ashburn was released on a $1,400 bond after being booked into the Sacramento County Jail.

"I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment," Ashburn said in a statement. "I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me - my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate."

He represents parts of Tulare, Kern and San Bernardino Counties.
