Bug Extracts

WASHINGTON (CN) - Cochineal extract, a red food and cosmetic coloring that comes from squishing female beetles to death, must be in the ingredient list of all those products to which it is added, by January 5, 2011.

Consumers may have severe allergic reactions to cochineal extract-containing food and carmine-containing food and cosmetics. This rule allows consumers who are allergic the additives to check the label and avoid the products that use it.

This date did not change when the rule was reconsidered by order of President Obama.
