Brown Appoints 2 Judges in Sacramento County

(CN) - California Gov. Jerry Brown appointed Bunmi Awoniyi and Steven Gevercer to judgeships in the Sacramento County Superior Court.

Awoniyi, 48-year-old native Nigerian, fills a vacancy created by the conversion of a court commissioner position last year.

Gevercer, 54, fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Gary Mullen.

Both new judges are Democrats and will earn annual salaries of $178,789 in their new positions.

Awoniyi studied in England, earning a bachelor of law degree from the University of Essex, a master of law degree from the University of Leicester School of Law, and a juris doctorate from the Inns of Court School of Law.

After working as a crown prosecutor in London from 1989 to 1990, Awoniyi served as a law clerk at the law office of D. Kapp Nees in 1991.

A Democrat from Elk Grove, Awoniyi was an associate attorney at the law office of Brady and Kent from 1992 to 1993 and at the law office of Steven L. Wessels from 1993 to 1994.

In 1993, Awoniyi became a principle attorney with a family law practice, her certified specialty. The University of Northern California, Lorenzo Patino School of Law, employed her as an adjunct professor from 1997 to 1998.

Sacramento-based Gevercer has spent the last year as a senior assistant attorney general with the civil tort and condemnation section of the Attorney General's Office.

Previously, he worked for that office as supervising deputy attorney general and deputy attorney general.

Gervercer has been an adjunct professor at Lincoln Law School since 2000 and at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, since 1998. He was a legislative advocate at the Attorney General's Office, Legislative Affairs Unit, from 2001 to 2005; a senior trial attorney at the Sacramento County Public Defender's Office from 1989 to 1997; a deputy public defender at the Tulare County Public Defender's Office from 1985 to 1989; and a sole practitioner at the Law Office of Steven M. Gevercer from 1984 to 1985.

Gevercer earned a juris doctorate from the University of San Francisco School of Law and a bachelor of arts from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
