Brothers Get Maximum for NYC Terror Plot

(CN) - Pakistani-born brothers who lived in Broward County, Fla. were sentenced to decades in prison Thursday for trying to pull off a bomb attack on several New York City landmarks.

U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom sentenced Raees Alam Qazi, 22, to 35 years in prison, and his older brother, Sheheryar Alam Qazi, to 20 years behind bars.

According to prosecutors, Raees Alam Qazi researched how to make bombs on the Internet using readily available items such as Christmas tree lights and chemicals.

Sheheryar Qazi received a lesser sentence because he mostly bank-rolled his brother, rather than engaging in the hand's-on planning himself.

Both brothers were also charged with assaulting two deputy U.S. marshals after they were taken into custody in November 2012.

Attorneys for the brothers declined to comment following the sentencing.
