Brooke Astor’s Son Sentenced to 1-3 Years

(CN) - Brooke Astor's son, Anthony Marshall, was sentenced Monday to one to three years in prison for siphoning millions from his late mother.

Justice A. Kirke Bartley Jr. ordered Marshall, 85, to report to prison on Jan. 19.

Marshall received the sentence for first-degree grand larceny -- the most serious of the 14 charges on which he was convicted -- for giving himself an unauthorized $1 million raise for managing his mother's finances.

Marshall received one year in prison for each of the 13 other charges, to run consecutively with the longer sentence.

At trial, several celebrity friends of the late socialite, including Barbara Walters, David Rockefeller and Henry Kissinger, appeared as witnesses for the prosecution.

The defense presented no witnesses, not even Marshall, to rebut the claim that Marshall had exploited his mother's dementia.

When Astor died in 2007 at 105, her estate was estimated at $180 million. She was an active philanthropist who supported charities and institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Bronx Zoo.

Co-defendant Francis X. Morrissey Jr., a lawyer who helped plan Astor's estate, was convicted of forgery charges.
