Brook Trout Not Protected

WASHINGTON (CN) - The coaster brook trout of the upper Great Lakes will not be protected under the Endangered Species Act, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Although the numbers are declining, the population is not genetically different enough from the brook trout across the Canadian border to be considered distinct.

The agency did, however, state that a wider investigation of the species throughout its range, not just in the segments under consideration, would be beneficial in understanding the long term viability of the species.
