Britney Asks for a Stay

LOS ANGELES (CN) - Britney Spears wants proceedings stayed from an Aug. 6, 2007 case in which she drove into another car in a parking lot. Spears says she's fixed one charge, by getting a California driver's license instead of a Louisiana one, was improperly prosecuted for the other charge, and besides, she was placed under a conservatorship on Feb. 1, which will continue until Dec. 31.

Spears' attorney, J. Michael Flanagan, filed a declaration claiming that Spears "may be forced to stand trial against a charge that should not proceed ... at a time when she is unable to participate meaningfully in her defense."

Spears' mother, Lynne Spears, also weighed in, saying in her declaration that Spears kept her Louisiana license out of loyalty to her home state, and has stayed in California to fight for custody of her two sons.

Spears filed her request for stay in the Appellate Division of Superior Court
