Bride’s Bruised Eyes Wide Shut

EDINBURG, Texas (CN) - A Texas salon burned a bride's eyelids and cut her left eye while applying eyelash extensions, leaving the woman blinded during her wedding, the woman claims in court.

Melissa Sanchez says she was rushed to the hospital after an unlicensed employee of Capelo Spa & Salon "glued the lashes to her skin rather than to her natural eyelashes."

She says the employee also lacerated her left eye with a silver eyelash applicator.

Sanchez sued Serene Relaxation for Women LLC aka Serene Relaxation LLC dba Capelo Spa & Salon, in Hidalgo County Court.

Sanchez was to be married on Nov. 9, 2013. She says she went to the salon for eyelash extensions about an hour and a half before her 2 p.m. wedding.

"During the application of the extensions, Capelo's employee, Maria Segundo, who was applying the eyelash extensions, lacerated her left cornea and burned both eyelids because she glued the lashes to her skin rather than to her natural eyelashes," the complaint states.

It adds: "Ms. Segundo was inexperienced and was not licensed as a technician to do and complete the eyelash extensions on Ms. Sanchez. After numerous warnings from plaintiff to be careful, Ms. Segundo did not heed the warnings and cut plaintiff's eye with the silver eyelash applicator. This individual was in fact not licensed to do eyelash extensions and no other person or employee of Capelo's was present to supervise the procedure."

Pearl Rose, owner of Capelo Spa & Salon, denied the claims Monday but declined to go into detail.

"I don't want to release too much, but she did try to do her own extensions," Rose told Courthouse News in an interview.

"Secondly, there are discrepancies in the lawsuit ... because her information is wrong," Rose said.

Sanchez says in the complaint that besides the physical injuries she received, "she lost the enjoyment of the lasting memory of a bride's most treasured day, including plaintiff was not able to go on her honeymoon due to her injuries. In addition to the physical pain and injuries she sustained requiring medical intervention plaintiff's cornea was cut and a scar will develop that may also require medical treatment or surgery in the future. Plaintiff was left with blurred vision and could not see during the wedding ceremony. Till the present day plaintiff's left eye vision is still blurry."

Sanchez seeks damages for negligence, including loss of eyesight and physical disfigurement, pain and suffering, mental anguish and loss of consortium.

She is represented by Manuel Guerra III of McAllen.
