SAN FRANCISCO (CN) – U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer has been confirmed as a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission. Breyer, 71, who is on senior status, is the first federal judge from the 9th Circuit to serve on the commission, which develops sentencing guidelines for federal criminal cases. He succeeds U.S. District Judge Ruben Castillo of the Northern District of Illinois. President Obama nominated Breyer to the commission last year but the Senate refused to vote on his nomination. The president renominated him in April.
