EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (CN) - BP Products North America will pay $19.5 million to be released from a class action in Madison County Court. The class claimed BP and other refineries created a pool of petroleum under the Village of Hartford, which released harmful vapors into the air.
BP will pay $7.755 million to property owners for loss of value, $5.17 million to residents for loss of enjoyment, $6.5 million for attorney costs and $75,000 for administrative costs. BP did not admit any wrongdoing.
BP is the latest oil giant to settle. Equilon, a Shell Oil subsidiary, and Premcor agreed to pay $16 million earlier this year. BP's agreement leaves only Sinclair Oil and Apex Oil as defendants.
