Boxer Michael Carbajal Says His Brother|And Insurance Agent Cheated Him

PHOENIX (CN) - Boxing champion Michael Carbajal and his mother claim Michael's brother Danny schemed with an insurance agent to transfer benefits from the champ's life insurance policy away from Michael's children to Danny and his wife. Michael, who won a silver medal at the 1988 Olympics and became world flyweight champion as a professional, sued the insurance broker in Maricopa County Court.

Michael Carbajal signed a $1.3 million life insurance application in 1993 through David Dorn and the Dorn Agency, with the beneficiaries Michael's children and the contingent beneficiary his brother Danny, according to the complaint.

Michael and his mother, Mary Carbajal, claim that in March 1994, Dorn met with Danny Carbajal, without Michael's knowledge, to change the beneficiary to Danny and his wife, Celia Carbajal.

The form to change ownership of the policy required Michael's signature and the signature of a witness, which Dorn signed although Danny had forged Michael's signature, according to the complaint. Danny then allegedly took cash from the policy, reducing its value to $16,000.

Danny and Dorn forged documents on two more policies purchased through Dorn, including a $100,000 life insurance policy that Danny later liquidated and a $300,000 policy on Mary's life that Danny reduced to $5,000, according to the complaint.

Danny is in prison in Florence, Ariz., serving time for multiple felonies, including forgery and fraud, according to the complaint.

Michael and Mary E. Carbajal are represented by Rosemary Shockman and J. Tyrell Taber.
