Bovine Tuberculosis

WASHINGTON (CN) - When a cow, bison, or other herd animal dies of Bovine Tuberculosis, the federal government reimburses the rancher. This is to encourage ranchers to get rid of infected animals.

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the Department of Agriculture plans to withhold the indemnity payments until an approved herd plan is in place. The plan tracks the animals to attempt to determine the path the disease may have taken, so the ranchers know which other animals might be affected.

Also, the agency plans to withhold 10 percent of the indemnity payment until the conditions of an approved herd plan are implemented. Payments also would be denied if the herd owner has failed to follow the approved herd plan, or has violated its conditions.
