SAN DIEGO (CN) – Former U.S. Border Patrol agents Raul and Fidel Villareal were convicted of taking bribes, conspiring to bring in aliens for financial gain, actually bringing them in, and conspiring to launder money, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
A federal jury convicted the men Friday after a 5-week trial. Also convicted, but not of taking bribes, was Armando Garcia.
Garcia walked undocumented people across the border and the Villareals picked them up in Border Patrol vehicles and released them, prosecutors said in a statement.
Raul Villareal, 42, and Fidel Villareal, face up to 50 years in prison; Garcia up to 35 years.
