Border Arrests

U.S. Customs and Border Protection made 58,207 arrests or denials of entry at the Mexico border in January — down 4 percent from December but up 62 percent from the same time last year.

SAN DIEGO - U.S. Customs and Border Protection made 58,207 arrests or denials of entry at the Mexico border in January — down 4 percent from December but up 62 percent from the same time last year.

In contrast to several years ago when single Mexican adults accounted for the biggest group crossing into the U.S. illegally, in January 2019 families and children traveling alone, mostly from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, accounted for about 6 of every 10 stopped.

Officials say there have been 60 groups of larger than 100 people crossing illegally since Oct. 1.
