Bookkeeper Gets 2 Years for Embezzlement

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (CN) - A bookkeeper for Texas energy companies was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for embezzling more than $659,000. Constance Bexley Iwanski, 56, pleaded guilty to bank fraud.

Iwanski began working as a bookkeeper for a group of petroleum companies in 1980. After its founder died, the group restructured in 1994, and Iwanski became the only employee responsible for keeping track of accounts.

She admitted she embezzled the money between December 2002 and December 2008, by writing more than 100 checks to herself, forging signatures and depositing them into a bank account she controlled.

Iwanski also has to pay back the money.
