WASHINGTON (CN) - An icy blizzard blowing snow in all directions shut down the government again Wednesday, draining another $100 million from taxpayers as it dumped 10 more inches of snow on the Capital area. The Senate is scheduled to convene today, but the House adjourned until Feb. 22. The government joined city schools and businesses in closing Wednesday, allowing 230,000 federal workers to stay home while the new storm broke the region's all-time record for seasonal snowfall. Airports shut down as far north as Hartford.
Closing federal agencies is estimated to cost the government $100 million each day in lost productivity.
The blizzard dumped nearly another foot on the 2 feet of snow from last weekend's record storm. The city had managed to plow main roads, but even these thoroughfares are abandoned now.
More snow is predicted for Monday.
The Legislature was closed on Monday, and made a feeble effort to reconvene on Tuesday, but only a handful of lawmakers made it to the Capitol, and the House canceled votes on the floor.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, is still waiting to begin debate on a jobs bill, after having said last week that it would be put to a vote this past Monday.
