Black Church Tries to Head Off IRS Audit

WASHINGTON (CN) - Southern Faith Ministries sued Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to try to head off an IRS audit of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, one of the largest black churches in the country. The IRS notified the Georgia-based church of the impending audit in July 2006.

The church says audits of churches must be initiated by a high-ranking IRS official, and the tax officer in this case was not high enough on the IRS totem pole.

The church is represented in Federal Court by Christopher Rizek with Carlin & Drysdale.
