Birotte Sworn In as U.S. Attorney for SoCal

LOS ANGELES (CN) - André Birotte Jr. was sworn in Thursday as the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, the second-largest district office behind Washington, D.C. Birotte, 43, had been the Inspector General of the Los Angeles Police Department since 2003.

He will oversee 275 attorneys serving 18 million residents in seven Southern California counties, including Los Angeles.

Birotte graduated from Tufts University and got his law degree from Pepperdine.

He was an assistant United States attorney from 1995 to 1999, then worked in private practice before joining the Office of Inspector General in 2001.

He succeeds George Cardona, who served as the acting U.S. Attorney since September 2009 after Thomas P. O'Brien resigned to go into private practice.
