Biggest Parrotfish May|Get Bumped to ESA List

WASHINGTON (CN) - The bumphead parrotfish may be headed for threatened status under the Endangered Species Act according to a 90-day finding by the National Marine Fisheries Service.

The agency has found that a petition submitted by the WildEarth Guardians asserting that the parrotfish is threatened by overfishing and degradation of its coral habitat, and primary food source, through coral bleaching and ocean acidification, contains sufficient scientific information to warrant a full status review under the ESA.

The bumphead is the largest of the parrotfish and ranges from the Red Sea and East Africa to Micronesia. The agency placed the bumphead on its Species of Concern list in 2004.
