Big Oil Contamination Case Settled

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (CN) - Apex and Sinclair will pay $4 million to settle complaints that their refineries contaminated groundwater in the Village of Hartford. BP, Shell, Equilon and Premcor previously settled similar claims.

Apex and Sinclair were the last oil companies to defend the contamination claims.

Of the $4 million, $1.6 million will go to property damage, $1 million for loss of enjoyment and use and $1.3 million to legal fees.

The settlement involves two class actions from 2003 and 2004.

Madison County Judge Daniel Stack granted preliminary approval of the settlement. A fairness hearing for the settlement is set for April 28.
