Beyonce and Jay-Z Lose Bid for Rights to ‘Blue Ivy’

(CN) - Beyonce and Jay-Z cannot trademark the name of their daughter, Blue Ivy, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruled on Monday.

The former Destiny's Child singer and her hip-hop icon husband welcomed their first child Jan. 7, and tried to secure rights to her name two weeks later, but a Boston wedding planner had been using the name since 2009.

Four days after Blue Ivy Carter's birth, a would-be entrepreneur tried to trademark "Blue Ivy Carter NYC." He was joined by another hopeful businessman, who filed for rights to "Blue Ivy Carter Glory IV," reportedly for a line of perfume, when the infant was less than two weeks old.

Beyonce and Jay-Z filed their trademark application several days later.

Veronica Alexandra, who owns the wedding planning firm Blue Ivy, asked the Trademark Office for protection in the wake of Beyonce and Jay-Z's filing.

The Trademark Office shot down the superstar couple's application on Monday.

Alexandra's website offers congratulates "to our SOUL MATE Couple with Baby Blue Ivy!!!" with a photo of Beyonce and Jay-Z and simulated fireworks in the background.
