SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - The U.S. Senate on Monday unanimously confirmed Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Beverly Reid O'Connell to the L.A. federal bench.
The Senate confirmed Reid O'Connell by 92-0 vote.
The Senate refused to act after President Obama nominated her in November last year. He renominated her on Jan. 4.
Reid O'Connell will fill the seat vacated on March 1, 2012 by U.S. District Judge Valerie Baker Fairbank, who has assumed senior status.
Reid O'Connell has been a Superior Court judge since 2005. Before that she was a federal prosecutor in Los Angeles' Central District for 10 years, after spending 5 years with Morrison & Foerster.
She graduated from UCLA in 1986 and got her J.D. in 1990 from Pepperdine Law School, where she was managing editor of the Pepperdine Law Review.
The U.S. District Court for the Central District of California now has no vacancies on its 28 judgeships, the Ninth Circuit said in a statement announcing Reid O'Connell's appointment.
Nationwide, there are 84 vacancies in Federal Courts, 68 in U.S. District Courts and 16 on U.S. Courts of Appeal. The Senate has failed to act on 22 appointments.
President Obama has not made confirmation of appointments to the understaffed federal bench a priority.
Another two seats are vacant on the U.S. Court of International Trade. The Senate has not acted on those two nominations either.
