Bernal Confirmed to LA Federal Court by Senate

(CN) - The U.S. Senate confirmed by voice vote Mexico-born Jesus Bernal as a federal judge on the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Bernal, nominated by President Barack Obama in April, had his nomination hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 6, 2012. He replaces U.S. District Judge Stephen Larson who resigned on Nov. 2, 2009.

After graduating cum laude from Yale University in 1986, Bernal obtained his juris doctor from Stanford Law School in 1989.

He clerked for U.S. District Judge David Kenyon in Los Angeles from 1989 to 1991, and then joined Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe as a litigation associate focused on complex civil litigation. Bernal has been with the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Central District of California since 1996.

The Central District of California is one of the busiest federal trial courts in the nation, reporting more than 16,000 cases in 2011. The court is authorized 28 judgeships and currently has two vacancies.

Bernal will earn an annual salary of $174,000.
