BBC Shutting Several Websites to Save Money

LONDON (AP) — Anyone with a favorite recipe on the BBC's foodie website would be wise to bookmark it fast — the popular site is to be shuttered as a cost-cutting measure.

Officials say the food website will be closed within the next 12 months along with BBC News Magazine and other properties.

The BBC says while the news magazine will close, "long-form journalism" will continue under a current affairs banner.

Local news indexes for more than 40 geographical areas around the country will close.

The BBC's Travel website will also be axed.

But it is the loss of the cooking webiste that has sparked the biggest backlash on radio talk shows and Twitter as avid users complained about the shutdown.

BBC officials on Tuesday sought to reassure the cooking public by saying that stay-at-home chefs will still be able to access the more than 11,000 recipes if they have bookmarked them or know their URL.

The BBC Food website closure is part of a plan to cut spending by more than 15 million pounds ($21.7 million).
