Bayer Must Spend $20M to Correct Ads on Pill

SACRAMENTO (CN) - Based on an agreement with the California Attorney General announced today, Bayer Corporation will spend $20 million correcting deceptive claims that the oral birth-control pill "Yaz" was practically a female miracle drug, curing a laundry list of ills from bad skin to moodiness.

Bayer's ads for the pill claimed that the drug could treat a retinue of symptoms related to premenstrual syndrome including acne, headaches, irritability, moodiness, fatigue, tension, and anxiety.

According to Attorney Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr Brown, the drug has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a cure for any of these symptoms. For instance, a television ad run by Bayer claims that Yaz can help keep your skin clear, but clinical studies have not concluded that it contributes to clearer skin.

Attorney Brown contends that Bayer has violated a 2007 agreement that was procured after the company failed to disclose safety risks associated with Baycol, a drug used to lower cholesterol.

The 2007 agreement prohibited the company from making false or misleading claims regarding any of its U.S. products. In addition to the $20 million to be spent on corrective advertising, the company must submit all television ads for Yaz to the FDA for pre-approval, and submit an annual report to the Attorney General s office
