ATLANTA (CN) - The Atlanta Braves fan who fell to his death from the upper deck at Turner Field died by accident, the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office said Monday.
Gregory "Ace" Murrey plummeted head-first from the upper deck Saturday during the seventh inning of the Braves-Yankee game.
He died of blunt force injuries to his head and torso.
Witnesses in Section 401 of the upper deck behind home plate said Murrey, 60, was leaning over the railing to heckle and boo Yankee slugger Alex Rodriguez when he lost his balance and fell at least 50 feet and landed head-first on concrete stairs.
Witnesses in the 200 level, where Murrey fell, and some players said he hit a wire attached to protective netting on the way down. Paramedics frantically performed CPR in front of thousands of stunned fans. When the game resumed, Rodriguez drew an intentional walk. Murrey was declared dead on arrival at Grady Memorial Hospital. A resident of Alpharetta, Murrey was a season ticket-holder and an ardent Braves fan.
It was the third fatal fall at Turner Field. A 2008 death was ruled an accident, and a 2013 fall was deemed a suicide.
The Braves, whose home park has been Turner Field since 1997, are building a new ballpark in Cobb County, northwest of Atlanta, slated to open in 2017.
