‘Bama Football Player Caught Up in Drug Sting

(CN) - A University of Alabama football player was allegedly caught up in a drug sting with narcotics agents seizing over 100 grams of marijuana from his dorm room.

According to a complaint filed in the Circuit Court of Tuscaloosa County, Ala., agents with the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force seized approximately 112 grams of marijuana and $4,661 in cash in a search of sophomore tight end Kurt Freitag's room.

Narcotics agents said they observed a drug deal going down on Oct. 7, outside Bryant Hall, a residence hall on the University of Alabama campus.

The transaction allegedly involved Freitag, who was identified to agents by a confidential informant.

"Agents made contact with Mr. Freitag, read him Miranda in room 413 of Bryant Hall and was given permission to search," the complaint said.

Court documents said the money seized in the search was subject to condemnation and forfeiture in that it was "furnished or intended to be furnished by any person in exchange for a controlled substance in violation of any law of this State, or is traceable to such an exchange, or was used or intended to be used to facilitate any violation of any law of this State regarding controlled substances."

In the complaint, Head asked the court to issue an order ruling the property contraband and forfeiting it to the State of Alabama or "the appropriate law enforcement agency involved for official use by that agency."

County Circuit Judge M. Bradley Almond ordered the money to be forfeited and condemned, with $3,495.75 going to the City of Tuscaloosa and the remaining $1,165.25 to be forfeited to the Tuscaloosa County District Attorney's Office.

According to the University of Alabama's official athletic website, Freitag is a redshirt sophomore who's played sparingly thus far in his collegiate career. In two games last year, he recorded one reception for 11 yards. A native of Georgia, Freitag played his high school football at Buford High School in Buford, Ga.
