LAS VEGAS (CN) - Bail was set at $113,000 for the husband of Judge Elizabeth Halverson, who is accused of fracturing his wife's skull by beating her with a frying pan. Elizabeth Halverson remains hospitalized; she is expected to recover.
Justice of the Peace Douglas Smith set bail for Edward Halverson at $113,000 Wednesday morning. Smith declined defense attorneys' requests that Edward Halverson be placed under house arrest due to his diabetes and sleep apnea.
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, this is not Edward Halverson's first run-in with the law. The newspaper reported that he has been convicted of three felonies, spent 4 years in prison, and has at least 10 prior arrests on several charges, including cocaine possession and breaking and entering.
His preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 25.
Elizabeth Halverson defeated Bill Henderson for the judgeship in 2006. She was suspended about a year later amid allegations that she fell asleep on the bench, abused her staff and improperly communicated with jurors. She recently endured a weeklong hearing on those charges.
