CHICAGO (CN) - A woman overdosed on vitamin D because Now Foods' calcium and magnesium tablets contained 50 times more Vitamin D than stated on the label - 30 times the daily recommended dose, she claims in court.
Susan Cellitti sued Now Health Group dba Now Foods and Swanson Health Products, in Cook County Court.
Cellitti claims she bought Now Calcium and Magnesium soft gels on Feb. 15, 2011, and took three per day until May, "as instructed on the label of the product."
She claims the label stated that three tablets contained 600 International Units of vitamin D, but actually "contained vitamin D levels of 30,000 to 40,000 IU per recommended daily serving of three soft gels."
"The recommended daily allowance of Vitamin D is 1,000 IU," according to the complaint.
"(T)he soft gels were not reasonably safe for their intended use as the soft gels contained 50-66 times the amount of vitamin D stated on the product label and 30-40 times the amount of vitamin D that represents the recommended daily allowance," the complaint states.
Cellitti claims she suffered "serious personal injury," and medical expenses.
She seeks damages for strict liability and negligence.

Vitamin D overdose can cause a range of symptoms, including vomiting, weakness, heart arrhythmia, confusion, nausea and kidney damage.
