Bad Hoof Trim Ruined Mare, Woman Says

JOLIET, Ill. (CN) - A woman says she had to euthanize her mare after it got a bad toenail trim from a bumbling farrier. Joann Postic claims that Jeff Chaffee of Farrier Services crippled her painted mare, Char, when he "misplaced three nails" and performed a radical "short trim" on its hooves.

In her complaint in Will County Court, Postic says that after the farrier's flubs, the mare needed major veterinary care and "ultimately had to be euthanized."

Postic seeks more than $50,000 in damages, plus court costs, from Chaffee, of Alsip, Ill. Postic is represented by Richard Craig.

Expensive complaints for bad hoof trims apparently are not unusual in the horse trade. Attorney Rachael McCart, who runs the "Equine Legal Solutions Horse Law" blog, advises farriers to get liability insurance.

"Horse owners may have to spend thousands in corrective shoeing and vet care to repair the damages done by a single shoeing, and in the very worst cases, permanent and painful lameness may dictate that the horse be euthanized," McCart wrote.
