Automotive Recall

The U.S. government announced Friday that Subaru, Tesla, BMW, Volkswagen, Daimler Vans, Mercedes and Ferrari will recall about 1.7 million vehicles to replace potentially deadly air bag inflators made by Japan-based Takata Corp.

MANHATTAN — The U.S. government announced Friday that Subaru, Tesla, BMW, Volkswagen, Daimler Vans, Mercedes and Ferrari will recall about 1.7 million vehicles to replace potentially deadly air bag inflators made by Japan-based Takata Corp.

News of the changes comes after Takata recalls by Ford, Honda, Toyota and Fiat Chrysler this year affected more than 5 million vehicles.

At least 23 drivers and passengers around the world have died after defective inflators caused shrapnel to be hurled at them.
