Auto Program Goes to Department of Labor

WASHINGTON (CN) - President Obama has revoked his executive order creating the White House Council on Automotive Communities and Workers and reassigned its work to the Department of Labor's Office of Recovery for Automotive Communities and Workers.

Earlier this month, the department announced that the president had selected Youngstown, Ohio Mayor Jay Williams to become the new executive director of the recovery office.

Williams arrives as the auto industry appears to have begun a rebound. The president's new executive order notes that, after losing 400,000 jobs between 2008 and 2009, the industry has begun hiring again, and that domestic automakers have gained market share for the first time since 1995.

The Department of Labor and the recovery office will be charged with continuing "to coordinate the development of policies and programs among executive departments and agencies with the goal of coordinating a federal response to factors that have a distinct impact on automotive communities and workers, including through the coordination of economic adjustment assistance activities," according to the order.
