(CN) – A New York attorney was disbarred for hitting a police officer with his car and fleeing the country before sentencing.
Austen O. O. Ugweches was convicted of second-degree felony assault after using his vehicle to hit the police officer who was writing him a traffic summons.
He lived in Africa and Europe for more than two years before returning to court on the outstanding warrant in January 2009.
In May, the court sentenced him to six months in jail and five years of probation.
In a per curiam decision, the Manhattan-based First Appellate Division ruled that Ugweches’ felony conviction automatically disbarred him.
