Assaulted Mom Says School Fostered Violence

PHILADELPHIA (CN) - A group of black high-schoolers attacked an Asian-American mother because of a racially charged environment nurtured at their school, the mom claims in a lawsuit in Pennsylvania District Court.

They Tieu says she was "attacked and severely beaten" as she picked up her child from South Philadelphia High School, leaving her with an eye injury, cuts, bruises and "agonizing headaches."

Tieu says the school and its principal, LaGreta Brown, "fostered a culture where Asian-Americans were subjected to repeated systematic terrorization at the hands of other students in complete derogation of their civil rights."

The mom says Brown did nothing to resolve attacks on Asian-American students and describes the situation as a "recurrent problem."

Defendants "created an atmosphere of hostility in which Asian-American citizens were rendered helpless prey to their attackers," her complaint alleges.

Tieu, who accuses Brown of violating her constitutional rights and infliction of emotional distress, seeks $100,000 in damages.

When Courthouse News contacted Brown for comment, a South Philadelphia High School employee said the principal was no longer employed by the school district.

Tieu is represented by Harry Kane with Saffren & Weinberg.
