Assault By Hedgehog-Tossing

A New Zealand man has been fined $545 for assaulting a teen-age boy with a hedgehog. William Singalargh was convicted of assault and offensive behavior after prosecutors dropped a charge of assault with a weapon - the hedgehog.

The sentencing judge ordered the assailant to pay most of the fine - $389 - to the boy whose leg he injured by flinging the hedgehog at him, The Associated Press reported.

Police told the AP the hedgehog was dead when they collected it as evidence; it was unclear if it was dead when Singalargh threw it, or if it died upon being used as a weapon.

The assault by hedgehog happened in the town of Whakatane.
