Assange Surrenders,|Will Fight Extradition

(CN) - Wikileaks founder Julian Assange was denied bail today in London and said he would fight extradition to Sweden, where he is sought for questioning about alleged sex offenses. Assange's associates said the arrest would not change their plans to release more U.S. diplomatic cables.

The court ordered Assange to remain jailed until another hearing on Dec. 14. He surrendered voluntarily to an extradition team from Scotland Yard, according to media reports.

Assange has said the allegations of sexual misconduct with two women in Sweden are part of a worldwide scheme, led by the United States, to pressure him into stopping his release of confidential U.S. cables that have raised diplomatic hackles around the world.

The alleged sexual misconduct allegedly involved consensual encounters that the women say became nonconsensual when Assange stopped using a condom, The New York Times reported today.

Assange told the British newspaper The Guardian last Friday that more than 100,000 people have been given the entire list of 251,287 diplomatic cables, in encrypted form, and that "If something happens to us, the key parts will be released automatically."

Pressure upon Assange increased recently as Amazon.com and PayPal cut off relations, and a Swiss bank froze an account Assange used to collect online donations.

Five major newspapers also have been given the complete collection of documents: Der Spiegel, El País, Le Monde, The Guardian and The New York Times. All the newspapers have been publishing articles based on the documents.
