Arson Fire Breaks Out at Mosque in SoCal Desert Town

COACHELLA, Calif. (CN) - An arson fire broke out Friday at a mosque in Riverside County, a week after the deadly terrorist attack in San Bernardino that killed 14 and injured 22 others, according to local news reports.

ABC affiliate KESQ said firefighters have contained a fire at the Islamic Society of Palm Springs in Coachella, 81 miles from San Bernardino. The station reported the fire was contained to the building's front lobby, but the mosque has sustained smoke damage throughout.

The blaze started just after 12 p.m., and the station is reporting it has confirmed with officials at the mosque that somebody "fire-bombed" the building. No injuries have been reported, and there is no word on the suspect's description.

According to the station, the mosque was also targeted by a shooter in 2014, but the suspect in that incident was never caught.
