LOS ANGELES (CN) – Screenwriter James Papa says a producer stole his idea for a reality TV show based around pirates. Papa says he copyrighted “Overboard” in 2004 – a show set in the Caribbean that requires contestants to compete in “pirate-related challenges.”
At the end of each episode, a winner would get extra booty, while the loser would have to “walk the plank” and go home.
Papa says his lawyer sent 10 show treatments to producer Mark Burnett. Papa claims Burnett agreed to produce the show, but later cut Papa out of the loop. Papa says Burnett ended up producing an identical show called “Pirate Master” without him. That show aired in March this year.
Papa wants $2 million. He is represented in Superior Court by Steven Lowe and Natasha Hill.
