DALLAS (CN) - A former manager at the Dallas County District Clerk's criminal department has been arrested and accused of stealing more than $130,000 from a vault at the Frank Crowley criminal courthouse.
Florretta Hampton, 41, of Dallas, was arrested Tuesday on a felony charge of theft by a public servant.
The allegedly stolen money included money felons paid for fines and court costs.
District Clerk Gary Fitzsimmons told the Dallas Morning News that the April break-in appeared to be an inside job, as there were no signs of forced entry.
Fitzsimmons said the county auditor informed him about a 2002 audit that pointed out weaknesses in how the office handled cash.
Fitzsimmons says the auditor made recommendations for tightened controls over money that were never implemented. At the time, Jim Hamlin was district clerk; Fitzsimmons replaced him in 2007.
Hampton was placed on unpaid leave in April and she resigned in August.
Her boyfriend, Dax Williams, 41, of Desoto, has also been charged with theft of between $100,000 and $200,000.
Bond for Hampton was set at $100,000. She is represented by Brady Wyatt of Dallas.
Bond for Williams was set at $50,000 but revoked due to a parole violation.
He is represented by Edward Shoemaker of Dallas.
