MANHATTAN (CN) – Federal prosecutors say an Army captain took “tens of thousands of dollars” in bribes to steer more than $500,000 in Army contracts to favored contractors in Baghdad. Capt. Bryant Williams, 38, of Clarksville, Tenn., surrendered Monday to face charges of bribery and mail fraud.
Williams allegedly took the bribes in 2005 and 2006 when he was a procurement officer in Baghdad with the 101st Airborne Division. Prosecutors say Williams concealed one bribe by telling the contractor to send $20,000 to an address in Iowa. In another case, he allegedly had a contractor buy a diamond ring on the Internet for Williams’ wife.
If convicted, Williams faces up to 20 years in prison for honest services mail fraud and 15 years for bribery.
