(CN) - A crowd of anti-racism protesters on Friday confronted white supremacists who planned to gather for a rally near the site where a Confederate monument was toppled earlier this week.
Hundreds of protesters assembled outside of the Old Durham County Courthouse in response to rumors that the Ku Klux Klan planned to rally at noon.
County officials evacuated the building along with other downtown businesses.
By 12:30 p.m., however, members of the Klan had yet to arrive in significant numbers.
All surrounding streets have been closed as protesters raise Black Lives Matter signs and take part in a drum circle.
