Another Corruption Allegation in NYC

MANHATTAN (CN) - A former New York City employee and two cohorts were charged with stealing credit card information from the City Office of Vital Records, from people seeking certified copies of their birth certificates.

Prosecutors say Evelyne Miracle worked as a college aid at the Vital Records Office and that Jazzrea McRae suggested she steal credit card account information and provide it to Nathaniel Robinson.

Investigators say Miracle photocopied Birth Certificate Request Forms containing credit card information, then gave them to Robinson in Brooklyn. The defendants then called the victims and claimed to be Vital Records Office employees, and asked for the security code for each card listed on the forms, according to the complaint.

Prosecutors say the ring tried to make $9,000 in attempted unauthorized charges, most of which were rejected by the credit card companies.

Each defendant is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, which is punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

Miracle and McRae appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Kevin Nathaniel Fox. Robinson remains at large.
