WASHINGTON (CN) - The Peter Cooper Corporation Superfund Site in Cattaraugus County, New York, has been removed from the National Priorities List by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The site, which was a disposal site for an animal glue and adhesives plant, was heavily contaminated by chromium, zinc, arsenic and other elements used to tan animal hides that were later "cooked" to render glue.
Although dumping at the site ended in 1971, it was not added to the Superfund list until 2000. Clean up began in 2006 and consisted of consolidating the waste and covering it with a low permeability soil and native grasses.
