Anabelle Chao, 6, works on a cursive writing exercise after having finished remote learning for the day, Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020, at her home in North Miami Beach, Fla. When her children’s South Florida school district went to remote learning as the coronavirus pandemic began last spring, Erica Chao wasn’t sure what to expect. Between the two children, Chao says they had about two hours of face-to-face interactions with their teachers on Zoom each week. “Essentially, I felt like I was teaching them,” Chao said. Chao made the decision to enroll her children in private school. Her children are happy with their new school as they continue with remote learning, where they have full school days and plenty of interaction with their teachers and other students.
