Amtrak Has Racist Polices, Rider Says

SAN DIEGO - An Amtrak worker told a passenger the company has two policies for dealing with problems, "one for white people and one for black people," James Bryant says in a federal lawsuit. Bryant says he was informed of this after Amtrak bungled an investigation of theft in his sleeper car last April.

Bryant says he was on his way to attend his daughter's wedding in Manhattan when a thief stole autographed baseball cards, jewelry, clothes, and his wallet. He says Amtrak did not bother to offer him food for the remainder of his cross country trip, though the thief had stolen all his money. And he says the conductor told him that "sometimes people get treated differently on this train."

Amtrak security eventually found the thief, a stowaway, then allowed him to escape several times, Bryant says. Las Vegas police took the unidentified thief into custody.

Bryant says he never received any information from Amtrak or from the police about his missing property.
