American Dipper Not Sufficiently Distinct

WASHINGTON (CN) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has determined that a petition to list the American dipper as threatened or extinct under the Endangered Species Act does not contain sufficient scientific data to identify a distinct population segment of the bird for protection.

Identifying distinct population segments of a species is a threshold determination in the endangered species listing process. If a petition fails to do so, in the agency's opinion, the agency does not consider the remaining edata in the petition that support the case for listing under the act.
