Aluminum foil can assist shoplifters, rules Minnesota high court

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Supreme Court found that aluminum foil, when wrapped around anti-theft devices at retail stores, can be considered an item designed to assist in shoplifting. A shopper convicted of shoplifting by executing this exact technique had claimed that aluminum foil is merely a common household item, and not shoplifting gear, but the appellate court ruled that her intent to use it to shoplift is relevant.
