Alleged Dark Knight Gunman Faces 142 Counts

(CN) - James Holmes, 24, the man accused of the deadly shooting spree at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater during a packed, midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Returns," was charged with 142 criminal counts during his second court appearance Monday.

Holmes, who faces life in prison or the death penalty if convicted, was charged with 24 counts of first-degree murder, 116 counts of attempted murder in the first degree and one count of possession of explosives. The last count is a sentence enhancer for a violent crime.

According to prosecutors, Holmes acted alone early on the morning of July 20, killing 12 and wounding 58 other at the movie theater. Authorities later discovered that he had booby trapped his apartment, an act that led to the explosives charge.

Holmes did not make a plea or speak during his second court appearance in the past 10 days.
