WASHINGTON (CN) - The National Marine Fisheries Service has created a limited access system for guided sport fishing for Pacific halibut in waters off of Southeast Alaska and in the Central Gulf of Alaska, to control recreational fishing.
Under the system, charter fishing business owners will be subject to limits on the number of permits they may hold and on the number of anglers who may catch and retain halibut on permitted charter boats.
NMFS will issue permits to the licensed business owners based on the owners' past participation in the fishery. The agency also will issue a permit to a Community Quota Entity representing specific rural communities.
