Alaska Governor Names New Attorney General

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CN) - Gov. Sean Parnell has appointed a private practice lawyer to take over as Alaska attorney general, replacing John Burns who resigned after just under a year of service.

Michael Geraghty, a partner with DeLisio Moran Geraghty Zobel, will take over for interim acting Attorney General Richard Svbodny.

In explaining his resignation, Burns, a life-long resident of Fairbanks, cited excessive travel and time away from his family.

Environmental expertise had been apparent in Burns' natural resources decisions for the state.

In his last opinion as attorney general, filed days after announcing his exit in November, Burns approved provisions for a new Alaska Coastal Management Program that would create standards for occasions when existing state or federal law would pre-empt land and water usage in individual district plans.

Geraghty is also a life-long Alaska resident whose practice areas include the Occupational Safety and Health Act, natural resources, construction law, and the oil and gas industry.

According to the website for Geraghty's firm, the Fairbanks native has served as lead counsel in all of his cases before the state and federal courts, including approximately 20 appeals before the Alaska Supreme Court.
